Samantha and David’s golden wedding is one for the books! The Hutton Hotel was the perfect space for this couple, and we are dying over the end result! What makes this wedding so special though, is how intentional they are over being married and being together finally! It will warm your heart for sure! Samantha gave us all the details on how they got there, their theme, and some helpful tips for you bride-to-be’s, too!

What is your favorite quality in your husband?

“Whereas I am quick to say what’s on my mind, David carefully listens to what others have to say and takes time to thoughtfully consider his words before he speaks. He is well grounded in his values, but also eager to hear others’ perspectives and slow to voice his own opinions unless asked. His patience and thoughtfulness are well balanced out by his uncanny talent to make up hilarious puns and to generally make tough situations seem lighter and more fun. Life is sweet with him!”

Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?

“We dated cross-country for many years before getting married, so we made tribute to our long-distance romance through a few thoughtfully chosen details in our wedding reception. Rather than numbering our tables, each table was marked by an airport code from a city in which we had traveled to visit each other over the years. It was surprising to realize how many cities we had met up in over our six years of long distance in our eight year relationship! On our placecard table we also had a metal airplane and a small globe. On our entrance table, my bouquet to toss at the reception was displayed in a metallic old-fashioned suitcase. My mom also (very creatively!) designed a framed poster enumerating the days we had been long distance and listing the ways we had nurtured our relationship across many miles (David by recording songs for me, me by sending him handmade cards). My sister is a photographer, and she created an amazing picture of us with a map of Boston that said ‘Love Knows No Distance’. It was fun to not only celebrate our marriage and moving to the same city, but also to remember the many ways that we made long-distance romantic and fun!”

Was the planning process as stressful as you imagined?

“I had thought (naively) that wedding planning would be very easy, so I was surprised by how quickly I became overwhelmed by all the to-dos. The year we were engaged was during my fourth year of medical school, and after attempting to schedule reception site visits around my 12hr/day pediatric ICU schedule, I realized I was in over my head. My mother-in-law is very thoughtful and offered to get me a wedding planner as a gift. That was a huge help! In addition to our planner, my mom has a talent for design and spent countless hours planning the smallest details of our big day. I was so impressed by the way she was able to creatively weave our long-distance love story into small but important wedding details, like our “Love Story” poster and the idea to make each table an airport code from the many places we had flown to visit each other. I was fortunate to have plenty of support and great ideas from the amazing women in my life!”

Do you have any budget cut regrets?

“Nope! At the end of the day I think it’s great to pick two or three top budget priorities and then save in other areas.”

What would you recommend to every bride-to-be?

“Devote ample time to your premarital counseling! It can be easy to get swept up in the checklist of wedding preparation, but the most important thing that you can do during your engagement is invest in your marriage preparation. David and I met with our priest multiple times during our engagement year, and this was the most fruitful part of our wedding planning. Our church also offered us many opportunities for marriage preparation, including scheduling us a session with a marriage psychologist, pairing us with a married couple as our mentors, and having us take a test that probed into potential sources of conflict that married couples face. Choosing our scripture readings, prayers, and songs for our wedding mass was also a great opportunity for us to work together and highlight the core values that will serve as the foundation for our marriage. Enjoy your marriage preparation and utilize it as an opportunity to fall deeper in love with the person you are marrying!”

What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?

“We chose ‘Our Love Is Here To Stay’ by Natalie Cole. David and I met in Boston when we were young (19 and 21), and it was a priority of both of ours to pursue our career dreams after college, even though doing so mandated that we be in different cities for many years. After he graduated from college, David moved to Seattle to work at a large tech company, and although I joined him there two years later when I graduated, I shortly after moved to Nashville to pursue my dream of a career in medicine. Through many years and across many miles, we continued to choose each other. Spending 1-2 days a month with him was infinitely better to me than spending every moment with anyone else. The song we chose captures the resilience of our love for each other—’It’s very clear, our love is here to stay!’”

What was the most memorable moment?

“Saying our vows to each other! I had waited so long to call David my husband. That moment of saying, ‘I take you David to be my husband’ was weighted with not only the promise a lifetime together, but also with the many years that we had committed to each other leading up to our marriage. It was such a joy to finally be husband and wife!”
