What is your favorite quality in your husband/wife?

Landis is an amazingly warm and inviting person, and she cares so much about the people in her life. – Mark

I really admire Mark’s strong sense of self. He knows what he believes and he’s not afraid to say it, but his delivery is never off-putting to anyone – he usually makes people laugh, or at least think. – Landis

Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?

We really just wanted to keep things simple and let the beauty of the surroundings be the star. The wedding was at my summer camp, which holds an incredibly nostalgic place in my heart, and I wanted to share the pure experience of being at camp with our guests without a lot of extra bells and whistles. So, we decorated the farm tables minimally with votives and bud vases of ferns, we ate our dinner family style (like you do at camp), and my sister and I carried bouquets of dahlias, which my family used to cut in the local area every year. My favorite part was that we were out in the open air – just bistro lights and the moon. We were able to dance under the mountain and the stars!

What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?

Our first dance was “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” by The Talking Heads (although we asked our band to play it in the style of the Lumineers cover – it just draws out the romantic tones of the song). I don’t know what it is…love The Talking Heads, love The Lumineers, love the lyrics. The whole song just feels real and not flowery…it’s how we plan to approach our marriage.

What traditions did you incorporate?

I wore my grandmother’s veil, which was made with Belgian lace to accompany a wedding dress that she and her sister shared. The veil has been worn by most of the women in my family since. We also did some family tradition roasts and toasts, including a tongue-in-cheek serenade to Mark at our rehearsal dinner by my bluegrass-playing uncles and Mark’s best friend (who happens to be a super-incredible professional mandolin player), and a champagne toast at the cake cutting with our family chalice. And of course, we incorporated the Jewish tradition of the hora from Mark’s family’s side. That is was a lot of fun…a little scary being hoisted up in chairs, but definitely fun!

When did you know you were falling in love?

Wow, that was a long time ago!! Let’s see if we can remember. I think we both agree that it was when we had to say goodbye at the Charleston, SC airport in the summer of 2008. I was going on a short graduate program in Paris (!) and I didn’t want to leave. We both knew this goodbye marked the beginning of a long-distance relationship because Mark started law school in the fall. We had been really happy for the four months we’d been together, but that tug at the heartstrings when we hugged goodbye (1000 times) sealed the deal…it was love.

Tell us about your grand exit!

Rather than sparklers, we had our guests light candles as a nod to various camp ceremonies and traditions. After my camp girlfriends sang Taps (the way we close out every night at camp), Mark and I exited through the tunnel to a lively rendition of Rocky Top sung by all our guests.

What was the most memorable moment?

It might not be the most original, but for me, it was the wedding ceremony. Being able to stand up there with my best friend and officially begin our married life together, in front of friends and family in such a special place, was perfect. It’s a moment I will never forget. A close second was almost being dropped from our chairs during the hora! – Mark

For me, it was this moment when my dad came running up to me on the dance floor and made me turn around. An almost full moon was rising over the mountain face above us and I was dancing my butt off underneath it with my husband, my family, and all of my friends from every corner of my life. I felt like I could explode with happiness. – Landis
