I’ve Got You | Mina and Houston Get Married

April 30, 2018 Real Weddings

Guys, this wedding captured by Waldorf Photographic Art is the stuff dreams are made of! This couple incorporated many aspects that represent who they are and where they came from, and let me just say, it was the sweetest! Don’t just take my word for it though! Houston gave us all the details below!

What is your favorite quality in your wife?

“Mina is the most reliable person I know. She is blunt, yet compassionate, conscientious, caring, and real in every way. I love that people are drawn to us when we are together.”

What traditions did you incorporate?

“Mina’s family immigrated to the USA from Serbia a few years before she was born. In Serbia, it is a tradition to welcome guests and friends to your home with a sip or shot of homemade brandy. To open our ceremony, we passed out small shots of brandy and ‘welcomed’ our guests by sharing a drink with them.

We asked both the Maid of Honor and Best Man to choose a reading for the ceremony but asked them not to tell us what it was. We enjoyed the surprise of hearing what they chose during the ceremony.

We also had live music during the ceremony from my sister, Rachel, and good friend, Brandon. The ceremony was not religious, but we like certain aspects of how a church service is organized. In the same way that music reinforces ideas in a church service, we chose songs that reinforced certain themes throughout the wedding. In total, Rachel and Brandon sang or played 4 songs, all of which resonate with us.

We had a tree planted on the wedding venue property and placed dirt from both of our homes around the roots to signify the foundation on which our relationship and lives are built. The wedding venue is owned by my parents which makes planting a tree on their property special.”

What was the most memorable moment?

“Our dog was the ‘Best Dog’ and participated in our ceremony. He was a rockstar and even wore a bandana that said ‘best dog’ on it. During the ceremony, he laid in between us and was just happy to be included. After the ceremony, somehow the bandana ended up around the neck of one of my friends who lived on the dance floor all night. Also at one point, the DJ put on a few traditional Balkan songs which brought Mina’s family to the dance floor. Half way through the songs, my friend with the ‘Best Dog’ banana on was dragged into the traditional Serbian dance. The entire scene was ridiculous and captured the nature of the evening.”

What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?

“Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors – ‘I’ve Got You’. We chose it because we have seen Drew Holcomb at our favorite venue in our hometown of Richmond, VA and because it checked all of our song boxes: short, sentimental, and relatively unknown.”

Tell us about your grand exit!

“Well, it didn’t end up happening! We had rolled over a hundred paper cones and filled them with rose petals that were supposed to be thrown on us as we left the reception. In the midst of the planning, we had a miscommunication with the staff, and the cones and petals ended up in everyone’s hands during the ceremony. We had a ‘grand exit’ out of our ceremony with red and white rose petals showering down around us. We may not have planned it, but the scene was perfect. It also meant that our reception didn’t have a true ending. But, hey, who doesn’t love a good dance party that makes you lose track of time?”
