Advice for the Maid of Honor & Best Man

  1. Offer a thank you to the hosts — usually the newly married couple and their parents.
  2. Tell guests who you are and your connection to the couple.
  3. Recount a favorite memory that you share with the bride or groom.
  4. Mention a special quality of their relationship that you admire.
  5. End with a wish for marital bliss, and “Cheers to the new Mr. and Mrs. (Fill in the Blank)!”

  • Don’t try to wing it! This is an important moment for the newly married couple. They’ve bestowed a special honor on you, so rise to the occasion.
  • If you’re not funny, don’t try too hard to make the guests laugh.
  • Don’t ever embarrass the newly married couple. When in doubt, leave it out.

  • Do rehearse. This is crucial. Practice your speech in the car, in the mirror, with a friend, or with your pet. You should be able to say it in your sleep by wedding day.
  • Do speak from the heart.
  • Do avoid inside jokes and any content that is not G-rated.
